In Mumbai Monsoon Mayhem: Flooding
and Transport Chaos After Heavy Rain
On the morning of July 8th,
heavy rainfall occurred in Mumbai city and surrounding areas from 1 AM to 7 AM.
Due to intense rain in some low-lying areas, flooding occurred, affecting
suburban train services. Officials stated that local train services on the
Central Railway routes were severely affected, and some areas recorded over 300
mm of rainfall overnight, causing waterlogging on various roads in Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) stated the morning warning of heavy rainfall expected on July
8th. Authorities mentioned that suburban services on Central and Harbour
railway lines were severely affected due to waterlogging on tracks.
The Disaster Management
Department of the municipal corporation stated that suburban services on both
Central Railway routes resumed at 6:45 AM. It was reported that the highest
rainfall during this period was recorded at 315 mm in the Ghatkopar area and
314 mm in the Powai area.
After heavy rainfall, police and
district officials rescued several tourists and trekkers stranded near the
Raigad Fort hill in Mumbai. Located about 170 km from Mumbai, the fort has been
closed to visitors until July 31st due to the heavy rainfall in the Raigad
district of Maharashtra.
An officer from the Mahad Police
Station mentioned that tourists faced difficulties on the fort's 'Pheri Marg'
(stairway road) due to conditions resembling floods. Raigad police and district
administration teams safely evacuated tourists and trekkers.
Due to heavy rainfall, nearly 50
airline flights were cancelled by 11 AM. IndiGo issued an advisory stating,
"Flights coming to Mumbai have been affected due to heavy rains. Contact
our on-ground team to choose alternative flights or claim a full refund,
